Fearless’ traffic man rewarded

MANILA, Philippines—He braced himself for a tongue-lashing but what he got instead was a promise of a promotion and a cash reward of P10,000.

For doing his job without fear or favor, Sol Botilla, a 47-year-old traffic enforcer of the Quezon City government, was cited by Mayor Herbert Bautista during Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at city hall.

This was after Botilla accosted Bautista for beating the red light at an intersection at around 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Bautista narrated that he was driving his car on Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City when Botilla stopped him after he went through a red light at the corner of Kamuning Road.

At that time, the mayor said he did not have his security escorts with him.

He added that Botilla helped several children cross the street before the traffic enforcer went over to his vehicle and asked for his driver’s license.

“He only recognized me when I spoke and acknowledged the [traffic] violation,” Bautista said.

According to the mayor, he asked Botilla to come see him in his office at city hall the following day.

The traffic enforcer, however, failed to show up.

Botilla said he did not go to Bautista’s office because he was afraid that he would be punished for what he did.

He added that he did not recognize the mayor because the latter was looking the other way when he asked him for his driver’s license.

“All I know is that I thought he was Chinese,” Botilla told his superiors in Filipino when he recounted the incident.

Elmo San Diego, the head of the city’s Department of Public Order and Safety, said that for his dedication to duty, Botilla would be promoted to supervisor.

He added that the traffic enforcer has been with DPOS for 10 years.

When asked what he would do with the cash reward, Botilla said he would use it to pay for his children’s tuition.
